MG has shown off a new addition in its product range before it is officially launched in the fourth quarter.
Although the brand did not give any details about the car, a preview video left much to the imagination. However, it will be all electric, measure 4300mm long, and was “developed with the UK consumer’s in mind”.
These headline specs and the teaser video hint at the model’s potential value, suggest that the new model will be positioned as an alternative to the electric family hatchbacks like the Volkswagen ID 3 or Kia e-Niro.
MG has hinted that the new arrival will have radical design cues, which will set it apart from its current EV models, MG ZS EV or MG 5 EV.
The teaser shows a striking wraparound lightbar, new wheel designs, wing mirrors and side panels. These elements suggest a more design-led billing that has been used by MG models ever since they were revived by Chinese company SAIC.
Its small size puts it between the MG 3 – set to be replaced by an electric supermini in the next months – and the 5, which means it is likely that this new car will be named the 4. A link to MG’s twitter feed redirects to a URL containing “MG 4 tease”
MG plans to launch a new generation of youth-focused EVs, under the ‘Cyber” banner. The Cyberster roadster will be the flagship. The possibility exists that 4 of these EVs will be part of the roll-out.
The car’s focus on UK buyers is still to be determined. It is possible that the brand will draw inspiration from its past life as a Midlands-based manufacturer of sports cars. For example, the Cyberster concept featured Union Jack-shaped rear lights clusters.
